Lakya Hunter was born and raised in Lorain, Ohio. Her passion for dance first began at the tender age of 8 years old as a member of the dance group, “Lil Sistah Squad” and later with the Lorain Middle School Drill Team.

Throughout high school, she was an active member of the dance team, which she assisted in reviving after its brief dissolution. She was also featured in the Lorain Morning Journal for her hard work and dedication toward the school’s yearly showcase.

A 2009 graduate of Lorain Admiral King High School, Lakya joined The University of Toledo’s Charisma Dance Team in 2010 and served in the positions of Secretary, Treasurer and in 2012, as President for two years.

In 2014, she graduated from The University of Toledo, earning a Bachelor of Social Work Degree. After which, she began to pursue her lifelong passion for children, working alongside her mother as the Administrative Assistant of a licensed childcare center managing employees, as well as state mandated childcare standards.

In 2016, Lakya earned her Master’s in Science and Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University, specializing in children, youth, and families. An avid life-long learner, she also received a Certificate in Management and Leadership while working as a Therapeutic Behavioral Specialist and serving school-based children, as well as children in the Lorain Youth Crisis Program.

Throughout her life, Lakya’s held a deep affection for children which she attributes to her mother, who lovingly aided foster children. “I love working with children because I feel they are the most vulnerable and the most resilient beings on earth.”
